The macula is an oval-shaped pigmented area near the center of the retina measuring 5.5mm in diameter. The macula provides us with the ability to read and see in great detail whereas the rest of the retina provides peripheral vision. Of all the different parts of the eye, the macula is where the most important images are created before being sent along the optic nerve to the brain, where vision is completed.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are particularly important nutrients for the macula and are present in high concentrations in a healthy macula. Increased intake of lutein and zeaxanthin helps maintain healthy photoreceptor function in the macula as well as support the health of the retina.
